After sending out my survey of questions for ideas for my front cover of my music magazine, I have got my results. Here I will analyse them:

Here is one of the questions I asked with a bar graph to represent my results. The title BPM was the most popular for people inside my target audience who answered my online questionnaire. I like this name very much and I will be using this title for my magazine because it is short and 'punchy'. It will not be forgotten by customers. The word beat can be used in a musical sense as a musical beat depicting a tempo, meter or a specific rhythm. For example Electric vibes is an effective name but I would argue that it is too long.

Here is the next question I asked my target audience. There is one clear favourite fort this question which is A DJ on the decks. I presented these results in a pie chart as it conveys clearly which answer was a favourite to my target audience. I think that A DJ on the decks will be a good image for my main cover photo because it portrays the genre correctly as I would argue that a DJ reflects EDM in a correct way. I will not be using fans in a nightclub as it would be harder to produce the photo. However I think that with fans in a picture there is no real focus whereas with one DJ and his decks you can really focus on the image and see all the different features of it.

The next question I asked was related to the cover line

For the cover line of my front cover I have been researching on the internet and have found some DJ name generating websites. For example http://rumandmonkey.com/widgets/toys/namegen/3675/#.VIV5of1B2Iw and http://www.fantazia.org.uk/interactive/djname_generator.htm

The name that have come up are effective and relevant to electronic dance music. However I will not be using any of them as some of the ones that appeared were inappropriate.

Here is a list of fonts I have shortlisted for the masthead of my magazine from the website: www.dafont.com.

I have chosen the name "BPM" (meaning beats per minute) because I think it will be the best for my magazine genre and target audience. One reason being that it is a short and punchy title that will not be forgotten. I hope that people understand that it stands for beats per minute. The word beats conveys a musical tempo, meter and rhythms.

Another popular font that some of my target audience chose was "Shuffle". I think this is a good font but not as effective as "BPM". One thing that "BPM" offers that none of the others do is that it is a name that customers will not forget as it is short and easy to remember.

The font I am deciding to use is the one which was most popular to the people I asked inside my target audience. This one has proven to be the most effective and I like this font very much. the most popular is the one with the largest quantity of ticks. I asked my audience to the tick their favourite one. I also like the most popular one because it has a style to it that links to my chosen genre of EDM.

Here is a link to a survey I have created on survey monkey. This survey is my audience research on the ideas I have got in my mind for what I want my magazine to look like. The results of this survey will be important because other peoples opinions are vital in designing a successful magazine. It is not compulsory  that I follow these suggestions but they are a guideline of advice to help me when making the magazine.

I have shortlisted some ideas for the title of my magazine. Here I have presented it as a canva which is interactive and engaging to my target audience. From this list I hope my audience will give me an idea of which they like and which ones they are not so keen on. These questions will be asked in a survey. This will help me to choose an effective name with the help of my target audience.

This is a mood video I made on Final Cut featuring icons, artists and fans with a relevant backing track. We did this task to gain more information on what our chosen genre is like and possibly get ideas for our magazine ww will be making in the near future.

I have made a word cloud on my competitors for my music magazine. These are music magazine with the genre of electronic dance music. After my research, I have learnt the style of dance music and have identified the similarities and differences of the styles of the magazines. This will help me when I produce my own as I now have a clear idea with what comes up in avery dance music magazine.

This is my Pow Toon i have created on my chosen genre, Electronic Dance Music. I have done some detailed research on the history,  the development, the fans and the style.

Summary

So far I have learnt the skills how to analyse a magazine. I have also learnt how to state the similarities and differences. I have learnt the four key concepts when analysing media products (Genre, Institution, Representation and Audience).

  • Genre- How media groups are categorised
  • Institution- Who produced it
  • Representation- In society, how is it represented
  • Audience- Who is the media product aimed at (target audience)

In addition to this I have learnt that within music genres there are sub-genres both niche and mass. We have looked at different genre research and the key points on why genre is so important.

This topic of my research and planning will influence my future work because in order to make a successful magazine, I will need to take all these things I have learnt into account. This will ensure that my magazine is well made due to the successful research and planning done beforehand.

This is my PowToon on a niche magazine that i chose. Niche is the term used to describe something out of the mainstream. We looked beyond the mass/common genres and into more specific genres such as Blues, House and Reggae. The genres are for a small number of people who enjoy one specific type of music.

Making these wordle's has helped me to understand the difference between a niche and a mass genre. Now i can choose if I would like to choose a niche genre which is more specific or a mass genre which is mainstream and can be very broad. A mass genre is one which is mainstream and well known. These are genres like Pop and Rock. On the other hand niche genres are more specific and aimed at a unique target audience. Niche genres are the way that music fans can find their style.

Here is a mind map on the key, iconic images that feature within music genres and sub music genres. This will influence my work because it conveys that every music genre has a sub genre. Within sub genres there are icons which represent each one. This helps music fans to distinguish between genres. This research has helped me to know that sub genres help people to be different and find a niche passion which is unique. Main music genres help people to find something that is more mainstream to enjoy. This will influence my magazine for when I make it because it has given me an idea of what different genres are all about and what famous artists are linked to which genre. Knowing  about famous artist will help me as on the magazine I create I want to have a well known artist of my chosen genre on the cover line to make customers in my target audience want to read that certain page.

This is my quiz i made for the publishing company Development Hell Limited. You should click on this link to see my 10 questions quiz. Researching into the company Development Hell Limited has helped me to see how the publishers of music magazines work and what they do to make the magazine successful. Designing the quizlet was useful because it helped me to set out my questions in an engaging and fun way. I have also learnt the skill to use this application which may help me with another task that is set.

This list of music magazines and publishers was made on Canva. We made this small presentation to get an idea of what the publishing industry is like. This also shows the process of what it takes to publish a magazine. In addition, this canva has helped me understand more about publishing as this list conveys that all music magazines have a publisher. Different publishers focus on different genres. Finally I have learnt that without publishers, music magazines would not exist.

This is a canvas I have created to explain why genre is important. This has helped me to know the importance of a genre and when I am creating my magazine I will know how vital the magazine genre is that I am publishing. Genre is also important because when I make my magazine I will need to research into my genre to make sure that if I am doing Pop music that I don't put someone depicting metal rock on the front cover.

This is my research on 5 music magazines which all have various similarities and differences. When i create my magazine front cover, I will be using these magazines techniques as they are the top sellers. For example 'Q' and 'XXL' both have the masthead in the top left corner. This is clearly a succesful technique. All the magazines have a big, bold and red title which stands out to their target audiences. This engages the reader in a positive way as it catches their eyes. Read is clearly a successful colour on music magazine front covers and I will take this into account when making my magazine in the near future. 'Beatz', 'XXL' and 'Vibe' all focus on the genres Hip-Hop and Rap. This has also helped me to understand what makes a magazine appealing and not so appealing. All these magazines have some differences which make them unique from one another. They must be unique in order to survive in the music magazine industry as it is tough market to sustain in. I will have to make sure that I do not copy any ideas and remain different from all others. This will help me to win over my competitors.

This is my Word Cloud on the music magazines and genres that I researched. Making this Wordle has helped me to gain an understanding of how big the market is in the music magazine industry. I have realised that each music magazine is categorised by a genre or sub-genre. Making this task on Wordle will help me in the future because it is an easy, fun and representable way to produce information of titles, for example the names of some music magazines around the world. They are presented in a more engaging way than in a list. When making my magazine I will know which genre to choose and which magazines are my competitors.

This is my powerpoint about the music magazine 'Vibe' - looking at Institution, Genre, Audience and Representation. It is analysing the music industry. In making this powerpoint, I have learnt the four keys ways of consuming media, Institution, Representation, Audience and Genre. I have made these four things relevent to a media text and here it is the music magazine 'Vibe'. The Institution is about the publisher and the background history to them and the magazine. The Audience is about the target audience of the magazine, who is reads the magazine? What is the age range and gender? In addition to this, where you can buy the magazine (Amazon) and in which city it is based (New York City). The Representation is about how the magazine is presented. What they do to appeal to their audience. Finally the Genre is about where it lies in the music industry. For example 'Vibe' is a Hip-Hop and R'n'B music magazine. This task has helped me know what I need to do before making the magazine myself. I will need to apply these four things to my magazine before I make it.

This is my industry context video based on information about the magazine 'Four Four Two'. After researching about the magazine, I created a video blog about it. This task has helped me to know what background information goes into the popular magazines around the world. This research has also helped me to know information about magazines, which I did not no before. For example what the publishers jobs are and who they are. Here the publisher is Haymarket and they also publish for other magazines as well as 'Four Four Two'. This information will hopefully prove to be useful when creating my own magazine as I know what styles the different publishers like to publish. Haymarket publishes quite a lot of sports related magazines. In addition to this I am know aware of how to appeal to the target audience and analysing 'Four Four Two' has helped me to notice the reasons why so many well known people in football subscribe to it. When making my magazine, I will aim to get DJ's and other well known electronic dance music artists to be fans of my music magazine.
